Itineraries
Day 1
Marrakech – Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou – Ounila Valley – Ouarzazate – Agdez
Pick-up at 8:30 am from your hotel in Marrakech. We'll travel by private vehicle towards Ouarzazate, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), the highest point in the country. We'll enjoy incredible scenery along the way and make several stops to photograph Berber villages.
Afterwards, we'll take a scenic detour along a small road, enjoying the beautiful surrounding landscapes, until we reach the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, where we'll visit its famous Kasbah (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986). In this spectacular setting, several famous films have been shot, such as Gladiator, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, Sahara with Penélope Cruz, etc. After visiting the Kasbah, we will depart for Ouarzazate, considered the gateway to the desert, where we will visit its film studios.
After the studio tour, we will continue our journey towards Agdz, crossing the Little Atlas mountain range until we reach this town in the middle of the great Draa Valley. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 2
Agdez - Draa Valley - Merzouga Desert
After breakfast at our hotel/riad in the heart of the Draa Valley, where we'll see one of Morocco's longest rivers, we'll make several stops to admire the beautiful adobe kasbahs and Berber villages that dot the route, as well as the wonders of the Draa Valley.
After lunch in Nkob or Alnif, we'll continue our 2-hour drive to the impressive Merzouga dunes, a desert of fine sand dunes. We'll settle into our hotel at the foot of the dunes, and after a rest, we'll depart in our vehicle to enjoy the sunset from the top of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Afterward, we'll return to the hotel to rest and prepare for the following day. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3
Merzouga Desert – Nomadic Families – Khamlia Village – Erg Chebbi Loop
Today will be a day immersed in the desert. After a hearty and delicious breakfast, we'll circle Erg Chebbi, a vast expanse of sand dunes where Morocco's Great Dune, over 250 meters high, is located. We'll then connect via a dirt track with part of the route used by the former Paris-Dakar Rally, with the mountains bordering Algeria as a backdrop. We'll continue our journey to a nomadic settlement where we'll learn some of the secrets of their life and customs.
Afterward, we'll stop at a panoramic viewpoint where we can admire Erg Chebbi in its entirety. We'll arrive at the village of Khamlia, originally from Mali, where we'll relax with tea while enjoying a short concert of Gnawa spiritual music.
Return to the hotel and free afternoon to stroll through the village or climb the nearby dunes to enjoy the sunset. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4
Merzouga – Rissani Market – overnight stay in Berber tents
Today will be a more relaxed day. After breakfast, you'll have free time to stroll through the village of Merzouga and experience local life. Then we'll head to the Rissani market, located 35 km from Merzouga, where we'll explore one of the most authentic markets in Morocco.
Afterward, we'll return to Merzouga, where we'll have the opportunity to have lunch with a local family. In the afternoon, we'll set off on camel treks into the heart of the dunes to witness an unforgettable sunset.
We'll arrive back at the camp by camel, where we'll stay in traditional Berber tents (Haimas) made from camel hair, just like those used by desert nomads. Dinner and overnight stay in the Berber tents in the heart of the desert under a spectacular blanket of stars.
Day 5
Merzouga Desert – Todra Gorges – Skoura – Ouarzazate
After a hearty breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to the desert and depart for Erfoud, where there's also the option to visit a fossilized marble factory before continuing on to the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad. An hour later, we'll arrive at one of the highlights of the High Atlas Mountains: the Todra Gorge.
The Todra River has carved a gorge with towering, vertical walls of immense proportions and breathtaking beauty; it's a paradise for climbers and a truly unique place.
Lunch will be served there, and a half-hour walk is recommended to fully appreciate the gorge. In the afternoon, we'll continue to Skoura, where we'll have the opportunity to visit its ancient kasbah, Kasbah Amridil, and take a short stroll through its palm grove. Afterward, we'll continue our journey to Ouarzazate, arriving at our hotel for dinner and overnight accommodation.
Day 6
Ouarzazate – High Atlas – Marrakech
Breakfast at our hotel in Ouarzazate before departing for Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas Mountains. We'll stop at the Kasbah of Telouet, where we'll visit and enjoy a traditional local lunch. In the afternoon, we'll continue through the Ounila Valley, passing Berber villages where families live in adobe houses nestled in the mountains.
Later in the afternoon, we'll depart again for Marrakech, crossing the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass with stops for photos. Here, we'll leave behind the lunar landscape, giving way to the predominant greens, ochres, and other colors of the mountains.
